City of Senj

Senj - plazaSenj's area covers 658 km2 with population of 8.500. 6.000 of them live in the city of Senj. The city's coastline is 76 km long, between the sea and the mountains Kapela and Velebit. The coast consists of many bays and very clean beaches.

Senj is connected with hinterland by road over the notch Vratnik (700 m over the sea), near which is Žuta Lokva, entrance to highway A1 that connects two biggest Croatian cities, Zagreb and Split. Senj is connected with Rijeka by highway Jadranska magistrala, which leads further south to Dalmatia.

Senj - zastava i grbSenj is the oldest city in the northern Adriatic and is known for its wild and rich history. It was founded more than 3000 years ago. In the Roman Age, it was called Senia. In the Middle Ages, senj is known for glagollic alphabet that was created in order to Christianize the Slavenes. Senj was also the home to the glagollic printing house, founded around 1494, among the first printing houses in the whole South-eastern Europe.

Kula Nehaj - SenjThe symbol of Senj is the Fort Nehaj, built in 1558. It was used for defending the town from foreign conquerors - the Tursks and the Venetians. It is 18 m tall and 23 m wide, and it is oriented according to cardinal points.

The most famours writers and poets were born and lived in Senj, which can be seen in the Poet's Park with busts of many famous Senj's poets and writers.

Karneval u SenjuToday Senj is tourism-oriented and to its visitors it offers comfortable stay, clear sea, nice beaches and excellent gastronomic facilities and entertainment, the best of which is the famous Senj Summer Carnival in August.
